Fundraising Dinner 23rd January 2012 at 7.30pm Saffron Restaurant, Castillian Street, Northampton. Speaker Hassan Shah The journey establishing a Muslim community centre in Northampton. An application was submitted by the GEM Trust in the winter of 2010 and attracted attention not only from the local British National Party but also from the English Defence League both locally and nationally. The planning application encountered a mixed response from local mainstream politicians and the local community. This story is a piece of local history of the triumph of those with a commitment to working for and supporting communities against those who would manipulate communities and pit them against one another. NREC 100 club members will receive a free ticket. If you wish to attend and are not a 100 club members, tickets can be purchased from our offices for £20 each. Hassan Shah I have lived in Northampton since the age of 6. I completed my undergraduate degree in Law & Politics at Keele University in 1996 before undertaking a masters at King’s College London in EC & International Human Rights Law. I have been working within the legal field since 1998, qualifying as a solicitor in July 2001. I worked at Irwin Mitchell Solicitors in Birmingham for 4 years before founding SP Law LLP, which is now in its seventh year of trading. The practice has grown steadily despite the difficult economic climate. The firm provides professional, straightforward and cost-effective legal advice in everyday areas of law such as conveyancing, commercial property, landlord & tenant, wills & probate, family law personal injury and employment. I specialise in civil litigation and property law. In terms of notable cases, In 2002 I acted for the family of Sam Ball, a 21 year man killed by a falling 10 tonne concrete beam whilst working as a labourer on a building site. The Coroner recommended that the Health & Safety Executive introduce a new British Standard in the respect of the manufacture of securing pins in lifting gear. In 2009 I brought a successful group action in the Employment Tribunal against the Sunlight laundry in Wellingborough on behalf of over 100 former employees who had been dismissed without adequate consultation. In 2011, I acted for the Trustees of the GEM Trust in their purchase of the former Clicker Public House and its conversion into a Muslim Community Centre.

At the start of 2011, NREC directors decided to incorporate an additional strategic aim into our Business Plan.
STRATEGIC AIM “Promoting a Culture that promotes and understands Human Rights in Northamptonshire”
To create a culture that promotes understanding of what human rights are and why they need protecting and enhancing. To promote understanding of human rights through effective demystification and explanation. NREC will work with others to highlight the protections of the human rights act with the protection that individuals with protected characteristics can enjoy in Northamptonshire.
If at the beginning of the year there was significant misunderstanding as to the reality of the protections brought about through the human rights act, over the course of the year and through recent events involving public disorder the water has been significantly muddied following the comments of some politicians and commentators.
To try and increase understand of the truth behind Human Rights, the British Institute of Human Rights is embarking on a national tour asking
What’s the role of human rights in a period of cut backs to public services? What is the role of human rights in protecting the vulnerable? Do human rights offer an effective tool for people wishing to challenge the impact of service cuts or changes? How do we make sure we balance one person’s rights against the interests of society as a whole?
